Brabantia Block Plus Tasty Dark Grey Knives
Brabantia really delivered on this product and it stays true to their style with its no-nonsense practicality and subtle aesthetic that allows it to match with any kitchen. The block contains the chef’s knife, paring knife, carving knife, bread knife, and utility knife. Each of these knives is made of corrosion-resistant steel that is ice-hardened, enabling them to keep their edge for longer. The handles are not as comfy as they could be however the grip is still excellent. The plastic handles and removable block bottom mean that the knives and the block are both easy to clean.

This set by Brabantia is a fantastic value set, it has enough knives to cover the bases for beginners and pros, and they can also last a very long time without too much attention and care (though you should still be taking care of them!)

Richarson Sheffield V Sabatier five-piece knife block
These knives really are excellent value for money, especially from a well-respected brand like Sabatier. The blades are made of high carbon stainless steel making them strong and hardwearing. They also have a full tang, this means that the steel goes right to the centre of the handle giving the blade extra power. What’s more, the blades are tapered making them more precise. Non-slip technology is used for the handles and they are stored in a gently curved light woodblock, this would look good in all traditional or wood heavy kitchens.

Robert Welch Signature Book Oak Knife Block Set
This set of knives produced by Rober Welch is a great quality six-piece set that is perfect for someone looking to invest a bit more into their knives. This set comes with a chef’s knife, a bread knife, an 11cm santoku knife, a utility knife, a paring knife, and a carving knife. Robert Welch had help from professional chefs when designing this set to make sure that they were the best quality. They are top of their class in terms of sharpness and strength, this is due to the fact they have a full tang and are made of German stainless steel and their blade edges are Japanese-style. Tactile duPont is used to produce the handles which are extremely comfortable. The solid oak block holds the blades vertically so that the knives’ edges are not damaged whilst in storage.

What to look for in a knife set

We all know that it can be difficult to choose a set of kitchen knives. There are just so many out there and they all look so different and have such varying prices, you’d be forgiven for feeling a little lost.

A start point, however, is working out what price range you are looking for, this obviously depends on your budget and whether you will be able to take care of them. If you are able to maintain them then you should be able to splash out on some good quality knives.

On the contrary, if you are a student or maybe just a beginner, you want a cheaper, more temporary set then there are still some great options out there that will be perfectly suited to your needs.

It is almost universally agreed that five or six knives are enough to do anything you might need whilst cooking. You’ll need a chef’s knife for chopping vegetables and meat, a paring knife for trimming smaller vegetables, a carving knife for when you want to thinly slice meat, a serrated knife for squishy things like bread and finally a utility knife that can do just about anything. Some more experienced chefs may use the santoku for more precise dicing, slicing, and mincing.

Another thing to consider is how you want your set to be stored. The obvious option is a block however these can take up lots of space. This means that something that can be stored or mounted might be a better option for smaller kitchens. There is a wide variety of materials from crafted wood to glossy minimalism.
